Your work is yours
You keep all rights to the stories, projects, and other content you create. Inkling claims no ownership of your writing. Your writing is saved to your Inkling account, and you can export it to Google Docs at any time, so you can leave whenever you like and take it with you.
Maps you make
The maps you make in Inkling are yours to use, including commercially. You can print them in your books (paperback, hardcover and ebook), and use them on your website, in newsletters and on social media, in crowdfunding campaigns, and on merchandise for your own work. There is no fee and no credit owed beyond what is printed on the map itself.
The art that goes into a map (the building and creature stamps, map styles, frames, coastlines and textures) belongs to Inkling. We give you a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use that art as part of the maps you make. It never expires, and it stays with every map you have exported even if you later stop paying. The place names, notes and anything else you add are yours.
What you can’t do is take the art out of your maps and sell or share it on its own: for example as an icon set, a brush or stamp pack, map templates, or inside another map-making tool.
Two things must stay on your map:
- The OpenStreetMap credit. City maps built on real streets use street data from OpenStreetMap contributors, shared under the Open Database License. Keep the credit “Streets © OpenStreetMap contributors · openstreetmap.org/copyright” on the map. Maps exported before October 11, 2026 show a shorter credit; in print, add openstreetmap.org/copyright next to it or on your copyright page.
- The Inkling credit on free downloads. Free downloads carry a small Inkling credit; please leave it in place. Downloads with a Map Pass or Plus have no credit.
Map lettering uses fonts released under the SIL Open Font License, which allows commercial use.
Using Inkling
Use Inkling for your own creative writing. Don’t misuse the service, attempt to access other people’s accounts or data, or use it to break the law. When you invite someone to read a story, they see only the single piece you shared.
Generator features
Inkling’s generator is assistive only: recaps of your own words, lists of the cast and places in your draft, dictation, cover art, and place names for maps. Muse’s idea sparks come from Inkling’s own lists. It never writes your story, and you can turn it off. You’re responsible for the content you create and publish.
Beta & availability
Inkling is evolving quickly. Features may change, and the service may occasionally be unavailable. We do our best to keep your work safe and synced, but the service is provided “as is,” without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent permitted by law.
Plans & billing
Inkling offers a free 14-day trial and paid plans. Paid plans can be canceled any time. If you stop paying, nothing is deleted: your writing stays in your account, read-only, and you can export it to Google Docs.
