Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 2026
Inkling brings all your favorite writing tools into one place to keep your stories, organized and beautiful, built on the Google Docs you already use. This policy explains what we collect and how we use it. Questions any time: lindsay@mechanism.com.
What we collect
- Your account. When you sign in with Google, we receive your name and email address to create your private library.
- Your writing. The stories, projects, recaps, ideas, cover art, and maps you create in Inkling, stored in our database so they sync across your devices.
- Google Docs. Inkling creates Google Docs for you, and can open Docs you explicitly choose with the Google file picker. We request only the narrow
drive.filepermission, so Inkling can only ever access the specific files you create with it or pick, never the rest of your Google Drive.
How we use it
- To run the app: save your work, sync it across devices, and show you where you left off.
- Generator features (assistive, optional): to write a “Previously…” recap, generate cover art or a map, or offer Muse ideas, the relevant text or prompt is sent to our generator providers (such as OpenAI). The generator is only ever for memory, beauty, and organization. It never writes your prose and never trains on your stories.
Your Google user data
Inkling’s use and transfer of information received from Google APIs to any other app adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We request the narrow drive.file scope only, and we never read, store, or share the contents of files you don’t open with Inkling.
Who we share it with
We never sell your data. We use a few trusted providers to operate the service: Supabase (database & authentication), Vercel (hosting), OpenAI (generator features), and Google (Docs). Each only processes what’s needed to provide their part of the service.
Your choices
You can disconnect Google any time from Inkling’s Setup page. To delete your account and its data, email lindsay@mechanism.com and we’ll remove it.
Changes
We’ll update this page if our practices change and revise the date above. Inkling is in active beta, so the product evolves quickly, so this policy will keep pace.
