The World Anvil alternative for writers who'd rather be drafting
World Anvil is a remarkable worldbuilding platform, with wiki articles, interactive maps, timelines, family trees and a huge community. If what you need is the book itself, with your cast, a storyboard and maps of your world right beside the draft, Inkling keeps the essentials on one desk.
Pick a stamp, tap the realm to drop it, drag it into place, double-tap to name it.

| Inkling | World Anvil | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A writing desk: the draft first, with your cast, Storyboard, goals and maps beside it. | A worldbuilding platform: an interactive encyclopedia of your world, with novel writing, publishing and a community built around it. |
| Worldbuilding depth | The essentials for the world your book needs: characters, places, notes and maps. No wiki, timeline or family tree. | Its home turf: articles with templates for every kind of thing, timelines and parallel Chronicles, family trees, diplomacy webs, calendars and statblocks. |
| Maps | A map maker that draws realms and cities, with stamps, named places and tinted realms, tagged to the story it belongs to. | Interactive maps with pins, marker groups, labels and layers. 2 maps on the free plan. |
| Writing the book | Write in Inkling's editor, with a “Previously…” recap of your own words at the top of each story, or bring in chapters from Google Docs. | Manuscripts, a novel-writing tool tied into your world, with plot beats and drag-and-drop scenes, on Master and above. |
| Characters | A guided character builder that asks about the wound, the lie, the want and the need, with a sheet you can export. | Character articles and profiles, linked across your world, with family trees on paid plans. |
| Private or public | Inkling has no public pages for your writing. A reader sees a story only through a private peer review link you send. | Built for sharing a world with readers or players. The free plan is public only; privacy starts at Master. |
| Community | No community or publishing platform. It's a desk for your own book. | A community of 3,500,000+ worldbuilders, with challenges and competitions, plus tools to serialize and monetize your work. |
| Getting started | Little to set up: open a story and write, and add a map or a character when the book needs one. | A large toolset that rewards time spent learning it, with a library of tutorials to help. |
| Export | Word, plain text, a Google Doc of the whole project, print or PDF, and a booklet PDF for print on demand. | World data export on every plan. Manuscripts export as HTML (Master and above), which you can print to PDF or convert. |
| Price | 14 days to experience the full writing desk, build worlds, and be creative. No card to start. Then $9 a month (or $72 a year for Founding Writers). Map Pass alone: $29 a year or $4 a month. | Free plan with ads and limits. Master $7 a month or $54 a year. Grandmaster $12 a month, $99 a year or $650 lifetime. Sage $34 a month, $300 a year or $1,350 lifetime. |

Honestly, World Anvil is far deeper for worldbuilding
We won't pretend otherwise. If you want an article for every city, faction and god, timelines that run in parallel, family trees for your noble houses and layered maps full of pins, World Anvil is built for exactly that, and Inkling is not. It is also a place to share a world: serialize a story, reward supporters, and join challenges with a very large community. For game masters and deep worldbuilders, it is a superb choice.
The draft comes first
Inkling starts from the other end. You open a story and write, with a “Previously…” recap of your own words at the top so a short session starts with writing, not rereading. Your world is there when you need it: open Cast & places or Maps beside the chapter, check the detail, and keep going.
Maps for the world your book needs
Inkling's map maker draws realms and cities, with stamps for towns, castles and ruins, named places and tinted realms. Tag a map to the story it belongs to, or start a new story straight from a map you made. Our guide to creating a fantasy world walks through the rest.
Characters and scenes on the same desk
A character builder asks about the wound, the lie, the want and the need. The Storyboard lays your scenes out as cards you drag into order and connect with arrows. Both sit on the same desk as the draft, so the plan and the book stay together.
Which should you pick?
If you love worldbuilding for its own sake, run a tabletop campaign, or want to publish your world for readers, pick World Anvil. If you want to finish the book, with the essentials of your world beside the draft, try Inkling for 14 days, no card. Plenty of writers could use both: World Anvil for the encyclopedia, Inkling for the manuscript. Compare more options in our honest roundup of the best novel-writing apps, or see pricing first.
Common questions
Is Inkling a good World Anvil alternative?
For writers who mostly want to write the book, yes. Inkling puts the draft first, with your cast, a storyboard, word goals and maps beside it. If you want to build a full encyclopedia of your world, with timelines, family trees and articles for every faction, World Anvil goes far deeper and Inkling does not try to match it.
Can I keep my world private on World Anvil's free plan?
No. World Anvil's pricing page lists private worlds and articles as a paid feature, starting with Master at $7 a month or $54 a year. In Inkling, nothing you write has a public page; a reader sees a story only if you send them a private peer review link. Prices as listed in October 2026.
Does Inkling have a timeline or a wiki like World Anvil?
No. Inkling has no timeline, family tree or wiki articles. It keeps a character builder, Cast & places for each story, a Storyboard of scene cards and maps you build. Our guide to tracking a novel's timeline shows a simple method if you need one.
I only want to make maps. Do I need the whole of Inkling?
No. The Map Pass opens the full map maker on its own for $29 a year or $4 a month: unlimited kept maps, realms and cities, and print-quality downloads. The free trial includes two kept maps so you can try it first.
Can I move my writing from World Anvil to Inkling?
Yes. Export your manuscript from World Anvil as HTML, open it in your browser, copy the text and paste it into Inkling, which splits it into chapters at your chapter headings. Keep the World Anvil export as a backup, and keep your world there if you still want its depth.
All of it. In one place.
This isn't five apps stitched together. Your storyboard, your cast, your maps, your covers, and the story itself all live on one desk, right beside the words. Nothing to sync between tools. No five separate subscriptions. Just everything a writer needs, finally in the same place.
